The Sri Lankan elephants are the largest of the Asian elephants. They can be identified by their deep gray skin (darker than the other Asian elephants). The declining population of these elephants is mainly due to habitat loss as their forests are cleared for development and industrial activities. Since the beginning of the 19th century, their population has declined by 65%.
